William James Basinski, born on 25 June 1958 in Houston, Texas is an American
avant-garde composer. He began his musical journey as a classically trained
clarinetist and studied jazz saxophone and composition at the University of
North Texas in the late 1970s. Inspired by minimalists such as Steve Reich and
Brian Eno, he started experimenting with tape loops and old reel-to-reel tape
decks, developing his meditative style. His first release was Shortwavemusic,
recorded in 1982 but released on vinyl in 1998. Following this, he self-released
Watermusic in 2000 through his own label...
