Violeta del Carmen Parra Sandoval, born on October 4, 1917, in San Carlos,
Chile, was a Chilean musician and folklorist. Raised in poverty with eight
siblings, Parra learned guitar and songwriting at an early age. She began her
musical career performing boleros, corridos, and tonadas in local venues. In the
late 1930s, she married Luis Cereceda and had two children, Isabel Parra and
Ángel Parra. Parra's breakthrough came with her participation in the
