James Hinton, known professionally as The Range, was born on September 12, 1988,
in Pennsylvania. He began playing drums at age seven and studied mathematics and
physics at Brown University, where he also developed an interest in electronic
music. After graduating, The Range released his first EP, Disk, in 2012,
followed by Seneca in 2013. His debut album, Nonfiction, was released later that
year. In 2016, he released Potential, an album for which he spent over 200 hours
scanning obscure YouTube clips to find samples.
