The Format was formed in 2002 in Peoria, Arizona by vocalist Nate Ruess and
multi‑instrumentalist Sam Means, who had known each other since grade school.
Their breakthrough came with the single "The First Single" released on
2003‑10‑14, which gained local airplay on Phoenix station KEDJ and led to a
contract with Elektra Records. The band released their debut album Interventions
+ Lullabies on 2003‑10‑21, selling over 100,000 copies in the United States. In
