Swan Lake was formed in Canada in 2006 by Spencer Krug, Carey Mercer, and Dan Bejar, all of whom were already established musicians in bands such as Wolf Parade, Frog Eyes, Destroyer, and The New Pornographers. The trio initially performed under the name Thunder Cloud before adopting the name Swan Lake after discovering a namesake. Their debut album, Beast Moans, was released on 21 November 2006 through Jagjaguwar and featured the single "In The Name Of Love"; the album’s title was inspired by Mercer’s description of Krug’s sonic influence.
