Superchunk
Formed in Chapel Hill, North Carolina in 1989, Superchunk helped define the
American indie-rock underground with their raw, hook-laden songs and fiercely
DIY ethos. Founded by guitarist-vocalist Mac McCaughan, bassist Laura Ballance,
guitarist Jim Wilbur, and drummer Jon Wurster, the band became synonymous with
the energetic, fuzz-driven sound of the early 1990s. At a time when major labels
were courting alternative acts, Superchunk chose independence, co-founding the
influential label Merge Records, which went on to release music by Arcade Fire,
