Elmer "Sonny" Lim, born in Waimea (Kamuela) on the Big Island of Hawaii, is a
Hawaiian musician and slack key guitarist. He comes from the musical Lim Family
of North Kohala. Sonny's father, Elmer Lim Sr., was a paniolo (Hawaiian cowboy)
on the Parker Ranch, and Sonny carries on the slack key tradition of Waimea
cowboys. He learned primarily from Fred Punahoa, a Kalapana slack key master,
who stayed with Sonny's family for several weeks to teach him. In addition to
