American tenor saxophonist Patrick Zimmerli, winner of the 1993 Thelonious Monk
Competition, is one of the elite composers on the avant-garde jazz scene. Leader
of The Jazz Ambassadors quintet in 1995 and member of the Jazz Composers
collective, he has performed alongside Bill Stewart, Kevin Hays, The Bad Plus
and Scott Colley, while recording a number of landmark albums: Explosion in
