A descendant of The Staples Singers, a group she joined in the 1960s, Mavis Staples (b. Chicago, July 10, 1939) embarked on a solo career marked by a soulful blend of gospel, blues and country. After the remarkable Only for the Lonely (1970) and some disco-pop wanderings, the daughter of Roebuck "Pops" Staples returned to her gospel roots on Have a Little Faith (2004) and We'll Never Turn Back (2007).
