Larry McKenna was an American jazz tenor saxophonist, arranger, and music
educator. He grew up in Philadelphia, started playing guitar, and switched to
the saxophone at age fourteen. After beginning his studies at the Granoff School
of Music in 1956, McKenna started his professional career with local bands. In
1959, he joined Woody Herman's orchestra. Throughout the early 1970s, McKenna
primarily performed in the Philadelphia area while teaching at several
