Born in Heidelberg, Germany on March 30, 1935, Karl Berger was an avant-garde
vibraphonist and pianist who co-founded the Creative Music Studio (CMS) with
jazz saxophonist Ornette Coleman. Karl Berger originally studied classical piano
at the age of 10 but soon became interested in the vibraphone and free jazz.
After obtaining a doctorate in musicology from the Free University of Berlin, he
started his professional career by performing in local jazz clubs. After
