Jill Heather Scott was born on 4 April 1972 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and emerged as a singer, songwriter, poet and actress. Raised in North Philadelphia, she studied secondary education at Temple University before dropping out to pursue music. Her spoken‑word roots led to a discovery by Questlove of The Roots, who invited her to record "You Got Me"; the track earned a Grammy Award in 2000.
