Genevieve Lillian Hering, known professionally as Jeri Southern, was born on August 5, 1926, in Royal, Nebraska. She began playing piano at age three and started her career performing at the Blackstone Hotel in Omaha before joining a US Marine recruitment tour during World War II. Southern signed with Decca Records in 1951, achieving success in both pop and jazz genres. She recorded "When I Fall in Love" in April 1952, becoming the first to do so. Her single "An Occasional Man" reached Number 89 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1955. Southern passed away from a heart attack on August ...
