Clifford Raymond "Cliff" Carlisle, born May 6, 1903 in Spencer County, Kentucky,
was an American country musician known for pioneering the use of the Hawaiian
steel guitar in the genre. Raised on a tobacco farm, he learned guitar and was
influenced by Frank Ferera's Hawaiian music. Carlisle began his career with
Wilber Ball as the first blue yodeling duo in 1924. In 1930, they debuted on
WHAS-AM radio in Louisville, leading to early recordings for Champion Records
