Charles Gayle – born February 28, 1939, in Buffalo New York – was a free and
spiritual jazz saxophonist who didn’t come to prominence until many decades into
his career. He first began studying piano while employed at the Western Electric
Company. By the end of the 1950s, he had switched instruments and began playing
the tenor saxophone. In the 1960s, he began playing free jazz and performing in
New York City before returning to Buffalo and studying under Charles Mingus at
