Nikos Xylouris, born on July 7, 1936, in Anogeia, Mylopotamos, Rethymno, Greece,
was a composer and singer known for his contributions to traditional Cretan
music. Xylouris' musical journey started when he acquired a Cretan Lyra at
twelve, performing at local events often accompanied by his brother Giannis on
the lute. In 1967, Xylouris helped establish the first exclusively Cretan folk
music hall in Heraklion, named Erotokritos, which catered to rural Cretans
